tips & tricks for growth
manage screen time this school year
We live in a digital world, so screens are a huge part of our everyday lives. And with school back in session, kids use screens more frequently during the day. Managing screen time during the school year is a big deal for all of us. And since we all spend a lot of time with technology, it’s up to us to help our children have a healthy relationship with their screens.
📱 Managing screen time during the school year is essential for our kids’ development.
According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, too much screen time can have side effects, including:1
- Sleeping problems.
- Poor self-image.
- Less time spent outdoors.
- Lower grades.
- Attention disorders.
The hardest part of managing your child’s screen time may be managing your own. Kids learn by watching. They will establish their relationship with technology based on your relationship with technology. If you always have the TV on or scroll through your phone whenever you have free time, they will probably do the same.
If you want your child to learn responsible technology use, model it for them.
be a better friend to your spouse
Friends are people we confide in, have fun with, and can be ourselves around. Does this sound like your spouse? If so, fantastic! It’s great to be best friends with the person you share your life with. If not, never fear; you can be a better friend to your spouse. Let’s be real for a minute. Life and kids can make friendships challenging to maintain, especially with those in our own house.
Here are a few ways you can enhance your friendship:
💯 Build playfulness into your daily routine.
💯 Explore each other’s interests.
💯 Have a regular date night. (And don’t talk about the kids.)
💯 Show your spouse they are your priority.
💯 Make time to talk and listen.
Take your spouse by the hand, tell them you love them, and you want to be their best friend.
let’s get REALatable
It’s time to take things a step further & get a little intimate with a Q&A. What do you say?😉 Learn a little bit about the faces behind all of this relationship gold. This week we’re chatting with James Woods, husband to Marquita, dad of 6, and the Community Outreach Specialist here at First Things First. Let’s get REALatable💛 & learn a little bit about him:
Q: What’s your top pet peeve?
A: 👏 I’m very big on respect & manners, because that’s the way I was raised. It’s respectful to say, yes sir, no m’am, and to always give elders their titles as well. Nothing against anyone else who doesn’t practice good manners, but they’re very important to me!
Q: What’s the best part of your job?
A: 💛 This job is something I only dreamed of at previous jobs… Helping people I can relate to is everything! My favorite part is getting to interact with people and go into my community and make a difference giving people hope and letting the world know to never give up on your dreams.
Q: What animal represents your personality?
A: 🦎 I feel like I’m a chameleon. I can typically adapt to any situation or surroundings, I like to blend in. Chameleons are great at adapting & changing for the better. (Don’t h8 me if that silly karma chameleon song gets stuck in your head all day! Oops.)
