I’ve noticed recently that most of us treat Father’s Day more like birthdays. You know, where we celebrate with a birthday-like atmosphere focusing more on the man rather than the actual idea of fatherhood. It’s become somewhat of a tradition for dads to be offered their choice of food, television, nap time, and tools.
I’m not saying all these things are bad. As a matter of fact, depending on the TV choices, I’ll go for all four myself. But let’s face it, most guys do this stuff anyhow. It’s just that on Father’s Day they get permission.
But what would it be like if we celebrated the idea more than just the man. Wouldn’t it be neat if Dads told their kids to pick their favorite father-child activity and then do it together? How cool would it be to spend the day reconnecting with your kids while playing catch or splashing in the pool?
Remember, man + kids = father, so treat them like part of the equation and the celebration and get the answer right.
There is a saying that “any man can become a father but it takes love to become a Dad”. So instead of celebrating biological fatherhood, celebrate being a loving and connected Dad.
Shouldn’t a Dad do something that strengthens his bond with his kids on this day rather than simply relishing in his own desires?
Anyways, that’s what I was thinking about and hoping for you this Father’s Day.
