The best-selling book Good to Great by Jim Collins laid a foundation for people who wanted to be more than good but great at the things they did. There is a tie-in from this book to the upcoming movie Courageous (from creators of Fireproof). It sets the tone for how a man could go from being a "good" dad to becoming a "Courageous" dad.
Since the movie will be in theaters on September 30, the fathering staff at First Things First thought we would take a moment to offer suggestions on how to make the transition from good to courageous.
We know that from research and real-life stories, a Courageous Dad:
- Invests 5 minutes a day learning how to enhance his fathering skills by reading great resources at firstthings.org.
- Surrounds himself with other like-minded men.
- Prays for his children.
- Teaches his children how to forgive, deal with temptation, and how to serve.
- Understands his role in disciplining his children.
- Not only talks to his children about sex and healthy relationships, but models it in the way he lives his life.
- Admits his weaknesses, and shares his stories with his family.
- Demonstrates to his kids how a man should treat his wife, and how women should expect to be treated by a man.
- Turns off the game and opens a book or plays with his children.
- Volunteers at his children’s school and is involved in the education of his children, because kids do better in school when dads are involved in their education.
- Accepts that his wife and children are healthier emotionally, physically, and mentally when he is actively involved, and acts with wisdom and discernment for their greater good!
- Stands for what is right even when he is standing alone.
