Do you remember prom season when you were in school? Back in the day you didn’t even think of going to the prom unless you were invited by a guy. If girls weren’t dating somebody anxiety was at fever pitch as they waited to see if someone would ask them to be their date for the evening. Fast forward a decade or so and we see that the times have really changed.
Several months before the prom Ivory, Britnie and Ashley started talking about the pros and cons of going with a date to the prom. They considered things like if you aren’t really dating, who pays for what? Or, having to dealing with all the talk if you say yes to one guy and no to others.
“It can be awkward and people assume you are dating when you really aren’t,” said Ashley. “We wanted to have a fun night without being tied to a specific person especially since all of us are leaving for school in the fall.”
Eventually the girls decided not to go to the prom with a date. They hatched a plan for the three of them to go out to dinner at a nice restaurant and then on to prom. Instead of the girls driving themselves and having to fight for a parking place, one of the dads agreed to be the chauffeur for the evening. Their first stop was at the river front to take some fun pictures. Then their chauffeur dropped them off at the restaurant, picked them up when they were finished and whisked them off to the prom. When the prom was over he was there waiting to take them to an after party. Finally, they wrapped up the evening by heading to Krispy Kreme for hot donuts!
For the parents, the plan eased their anxiety when it came to all the things that could go wrong on this infamous night. There were no questions about who the girls were with, where they were or what they were doing. Having a dad as a chauffeur was a great way to guard against anything stupid happening that could jeopardize graduation or their future.
“The night was great in a lot of different ways!” said Ashley. “Our parents weren’t worried about three girls driving themselves around town and we didn’t have to worry about crazy drivers. We had fun at the prom dancing and hanging out with lots of different people. We were taking pictures with everybody and making some great memories and we didn’t have to worry about a date feeling left out.”
Clearly these girls were creative and came up with a fun solution that allowed them to make great memories that will last a life time. In spite of questions from some about why they weren’t taking a date, they were courageous enough to do something different. They knew what they wanted to take away from their prom night experience: A night out with their friends that was drama-free! They went about making a plan to achieve their goal and still enjoy being a teenager. Mission accomplished!
