Bringing home a new baby is very exciting and sometimes a bit scary. Changing diapers, nursing, bottle issues and figuring out why the baby is crying are just a few issues for a new mom and dad. Grandparents can be a wealth of knowledge and a source of strength during this time.
First-time grandparent, Beth Phillips' voice lifted with excitement as she exclaimed that the arrival of their grandgirl three years ago has been the greatest blessing of all since the birth of her own daughter.
"The first week we were available to meet whatever needs arose,” said Mrs. Phillips. “I sat next to our jaundiced grandgirl as she lay under that awful bili-light for three days so Brooke could rest. During those first weeks I realized I did not have the amount of energy I had when Brooke was born."
Brooke Phillips Moore describes her mom's constant and consistent involvement as “the calming effect" on an easily stressed first-time mom.
"I am a stronger and better mom thanks to my mom's encouragement, support and love," said Mrs. Moore.
The Phillips' grandgirl is now three years old and every day is an adventure.
"It has been a blessing to be close enough to see her regularly,” said Mrs. Phillips. “I continue to be amazed at how fast she changes."
In addition to raising her own daughter, Mrs. Phillips taught preschool for several years. She is quick to share that the majority of her friends are under three feet tall! Needless to say, she has experience under her belt and the gift of relating to children.
"My role as a teacher has carried through to both Brooke and my grandgirl,” said Mrs. Phillips. “I encourage Brooke to expose her to experiences and activities and not limit her just because the box says 3+. The point is, don’t underestimate the ability of a child.”
This advice has been invaluable to the family. The beautiful grandparenthood experience is worth the mess whether it be paint, Play-doh, or a coffee table full of canned goods to play store.
Time equals love when it comes to children. From the time she could walk, the Phillips' grandgirl has had jobs when visiting their home including feeding the pets. Even at three, these jobs along with taking care of her own puppy and feeding the birds, have inspired her interest in animals. She already says she wants to be a "Pet Vet" when she gets big.
Together, she and Mrs. Phillips host their own "cooking show" complete with a studio audience of dolls while they make cookies, muffins, or whatever is on the daily menu. They also enjoy playing educational games and puzzles or reading books together. At any given time you might find "Gretel" from "The Sound of Music" dressed in authentic costume preparing for a journey to Austria as she sings "Do-Re-Mi.”
Here are a few suggestions for making the most of being a grandparent:
- PLAY!
- Support their parenting decisions.
- Don't think you know everything or have all the answers. Times have changed since you had children! Encourage new parents to consult their pediatrician.
- Have a sense of humor!
- Enjoy every second of every stage with abundant kisses and hugs!
